Blunt Objects Theatre

"We've had enough of life invading the theatre.

It's time for theatre to invade life."   -   Eugene O'Neill

An Explanation of who we are, and a Call to Arms for you to join us

     So, the short version:
The same way a bunch of kids start jamming in their basement and create a band, we started running around with puppets and masks and started a show. Tom Foran and Bohrs Hoff had similar ideas of what live theatre was capable of and what it should be, but Tom had the more screaming urge to get the Hell out of Connecticut.  Bohrs, having recently used college as an escape route from that state, agreed to help put a touring show together.  The result was Blunt Objects Theatre, and they have been doing DIY Punk Theatre with their friends since the summer of 2009.

Now, to be a bit more wordy about the matter: Blunt Objects Theatre is a loose collective of theatre-freaks who harbor a deep love of DIY ethics and punk rock sensibilities. Theatre's purpose is to hold the mirror up to the world; and punk's purpose is to hold the world up to the standards we were promised.

Punk is about rebellion, subversion, iconoclasm, social and cultural upheaval, and a sense of urgent, jubilant anger.

Theatre is about a transmission of ideas and feelings and questions using image, speech, text, movement and spectacle.

The only distinction that we can see is theatre is considered "high art" by mainstream society and punk is considered undesirable and childish. We want to destroy the artificial barrier between punk rock chaos and theatrical madness. We want to make a theatrical experience as dangerous and subversive and seditious and important and interactive and obscenely fun as a punk show. Help us!

What we keep calling "DIY Punk Theatre" is basically this: Any low-budget minimalist production that adapts to any empty space with an audience.   We want to encourage this style of theatre among as many people as possible so that anybody can create or host a show around the country.  This can be guerilla street theatre, it can be in your friend's basement, it can be at cultural centers or legitimate stages.  But Punk Theatre, as a movement, is as broad and as varied as anything that combines the already diverse traditions of punk and theatre.  And you should think about getting your hands dirty with us.

We would like to create a community of artists that share our general views and connect each other.  But such delusions of grandeur probably won't be realized for a few years yet.  This movement is young, but it is vital.  We encourage any and every one who stumbles upon our productions, or even just this site, to take whatever you like from our philosophies, leave whatever you dislike, and give credit where credit is due.  We are happy to share ideas and resources, so please contact us!  A nationwide punk theatre circuit is something that can happen, and can be awesome.  Think on it a while.
