Blunt Objects Theatre

An open letter to friends of live theatre:

As you may already be aware, our art form is dying.  Many people are inclined to blame the mass media of television and cinema, but such shameless finger-pointing would infer that live theatre is in fact obsolete.  Blunt Objects Theatre does not hold to that.  All art forms are unique, and just as watercolor is different from oil painting, and the same technique is not applicable to both copper and marble sculpture, live theatre is a separate art form from its mass media counterparts, despite their many apparent similarities.

We believe that, in order to survive and even thrive as an art form, live theatre must hone in on the technique or attribute that makes it unique among art forms.  We believe that this attribute is the lack of any physical barrier between artist and audience.  To that end, we believe in the destruction and violation of the “Fourth Wall” as much as possible to serve the story.  Though some stories are undeniably better served by the strict realism encouraged by film, there are many stories that demand a connection between the stage and the audience that only theatre can provide.

In performance, the artists of Blunt Objects Theatre utilize as many and as varied techniques as possible to serve our goal of resuscitating the relevance of live theatre.  This ranges from the obvious Brechtian conventions of Epic Theatre and Artaud’s Theatre of Cruelty, to Greek and Balinese ritual theatre, to Renaissance-era presentational styles and Grande Guinol, to Punk Rock and Vaudeville, and anything in between.  We are limited only by the ability and imagination of those who call us friends and fellow artists.

We welcome you to join our movement.

    Love and Solidarity,

The crew at Blunt Objects Theatre
